German Castles and Palaces

Klaus Merten
Photographs by Paolo Marton

Germany has more magnificent palaces and castles than any other country in Europe. Rich in art and history, this wealth of beautiful buildings is the result of rule by independent princely states before consolidation in 1870.

This is the first time that a complete volume on German architectural treasures has appeared. Photographed in spectacular full-page colour by Paolo Marton and described by a team of scholars, a huge variety of architectural styles can be seen, from the Gothic severity of Schloss Gattorf to the fin-de-siècle eccentricity of King Ludwig’s Bavarian castles. Many, such as Berlin’s Charlottenburg and Würzburg’s Residenz with its splendid Tiepolo frescoes are popular tourist sites. Others are relatively unknown but equally grand, set in beautiful formal gardens and with magnificent interiors.

The book is enhanced by a scholarly introduction, maps, a glossary and bibliography.

Germany’s castles are visited by thousands of people every year. This is a book that will be treasured by travellers and everyone interested in European art, architecture and history.
