Of Earth and Fire The T.T. Tsui Collection of Chinese Art in the National Gallery of Australia
Maud Girard-Geslan
| Of Earth and Fire is an unprecedented opportunity to become familiar with one of the world’s major civilizations through the beautiful ceramics created there. This outstanding collection of Chinese ceramic works of art was given to the National Gallery of Australia by Dr T.T. Tsui of Hong Kong. Arts and handicrafts received much attention in China, hence the existence of a huge reservoir of skilled and dedicated craftsmen during its entire known history. Chinese kings and emperors were patrons of the arts and devoted huge resources to express the genius and the ideology of their time and their aims. Aristocrats and merchants, literati and eunuchs, wives and concubines could be avid collectors, as of course were European royalty and the rich. All these facts have resulted in the creation and survival of the fine ceramics catalogued here. Maud Girard-Geslan is Chargée de Mission at the Musée National des Arts Asiatiques-Guimet, Paris. |
