This is the first book in many years devoted to Tiffany lamps. The authors, both experts in Tiffany’s work, have made a selection of exceptional lamps – many of which have rarely been seen – and new photographic techniques reveal in extraordinary detail the revolutionary quality and the high craftsmanship of these masterpieces.
This handsome volume features over seventy carefully selected lamps, drawn from private and public collections on three continents. A number of the lamps are unique.
Louis Comfort Tiffany found inspiration in nature and in the gardens of his vast country estates on Long Island’s North Shore. There he painted and photographed tree blossoms, vines, flowers and fauna that became the chief ornaments of the prized lamps which brought him international acclaim and secured his position in the history of art.
Drawing on previously unpublished photographs and watercolours by Tiffany and artists in his employ, as well as working drawings, the authors reveal step-by-step the complex fabrication process from free hand sketch to elegant finished form.
Noted authorities on Tiffany Martin Eidelberg and Alice Cooney Frelinghuysen contribute essays on the history of these objects, enlarging our understanding of Tiffany’s achievement.
