The Most Beautiful Villages of Greece and the Greek Islands Mark Ottaway Photographs by Hugh Palmer
| The very essence of Greece is conjured up in the flat roofed white houses of the Cyclades, startling against the blue sky and Aegean Sea.
This lovely book follows a journey which takes in the mountains of the mainland, where villages characterised by flowers and running water, stone-walled ground floors and overhanging wood-framed balconies betray a Turkish influence. It begins however in the Southern Peloponnese, where the tower houses were built by families warring with their neighbours. The villages of the Ionian Islands boast high-belfried churches, porticoes and colonnades, a testament to the rule by Venice. All the islands have their own delights: ancient temples and sandy bays, cobbled paths and shaded courtyards.
