The Vanguard Landscapes and Gardens of Martha Schwartz

Edited by Tim Richardson
With essays by Martha Schwartz

‘Enormously interesting’
– The Times

The determination of our environment is the single most important design task we have for the twenty-first century
Martha Schwartz

One of the most exciting and most popular designers working today, Martha Schwartz has almost single-handedly redefined the notion of landscape architecture, eschewing conventional notions of ‘natural’ and ‘landscape’ with an exciting mix of bold formalism, vibrant colours and unexpected materials and plants. Ever since her ‘Bagel Garden’ (1979) stirred controversy and attracted international attention, she has been at the vanguard of her field, celebrated and influential around the world.

This is the complete monograph of Schwartz’s corpus, some 32 works loosely grouped into themes and presented through breathtaking photographs, accessible drawings and plans, as well as elucidating texts written by one of the UK’s most intelligent garden and landscape critics, Tim Richardson. Essays written by Schwartz give unique insight into her philosophy and her creative process and provoke considerations about the human-made and natural world of the future.

The wide-ranging nature of Schwartz’s work is of appeal to professionals across a broad range of design disciplines and urban planners, as well as to a non-professional audience looking for inspiration and innovation. In Schwartz’s words, ‘a landscape can be about anything’.

Martha Schwartz studied at the University of Michigan and Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, where she is currently a professor. She is one of the world’s most recognized landscape architects. Tim Richardson is an independent writer on contemporary gardens and landscape architecture. He regularly contributes to The Daily Telegraph and Country Life, both in London, and was gardens editor of Wallpaper*. He was founding editor of New Eden, the contemporary gardens magazine.
